Literature Text

Strangle the poor,
crush the weak.
We'll rock our consciences to sleep.

Hush now babe, no more tears.
We'll watch our problems disappear.

And spill like oil into the earth.
The meek will rest in their reward.

We will rest...

Let airways close,
eyes go blank.

Watch the fear from lovers drain.

Euthanize;
Excise the hearts
of families born to fall apart.

Breathe in deep our poisoned air.
The smog will smother all our cares

All our cares...

Climb the rungs
with broken legs.
Don't let others
see you beg.

That's the plan laid out for you....

Or chase the dreams
some get for free
or face the grim reality:

under the sun, there's nothing new.
The many still owned by the few.

So let lips slough off to reveal our smiles.
Let the earth die around the vile.

Rot away

Rot away.

Rot away.

Rot away.

This is another song from an album I'm working on. It's a melancholic, 80's-style song, similar to "Wonderful Life" by Black. The idea behind a huge part of the album is the fear of failure, and this song reflects that. It feels like people constantly have to fight against lawyers and lobbying arms and powerful figures for daring to be alive. In the US, we still don't have a minimum wage that's tied to inflation and cost-of-living. That's an actual issue somehow. There are workers who are actually paid below what the dollar is now valued, and below the cost of goods. We still don't have comprehensive healthcare, let alone healthcare that focuses on preventative care or mental health. Why should people who are working their hardest have to fight to afford groceries and a home and the ability to stay healthy and sane?

The other problem is that a poor man has to work harder than a rich man to be heard, because he can't afford to hire lawyers or lobbyists. Verizon sued the FCC to say they couldn't enforce net neutrality. So many citizens voiced in against this that the FCC hasn't been able to use their phone lines, the FCC comments page has crashed, and Tom Wheeler (Chairman of the FCC) has had to remove his email. Still, the FCC says "we'll think about it." Meanwhile, Verizon's CEO never had to lift a finger.

I could go into a longer rant about the people who shout "life isn't fair," as if applying some umbrella term to the act of living excuses their personal faults, but it'd be off-topic. This song doesn't deal with solutions. Just the feeling you get trying to reach them. And how much better it seems if you just let the fatigue and horror of fighting for a better world take its toll, and never have to worry again. How after seeing how much corruption and waste and greed there is in the world, maybe it's not such a great place to live. Let the greedy fight like animals and rip each other apart. Let the rest die peacefully, and have it finally done with. Just give up.

That's what was going through my head when I wrote this.

Hope you like it.
